Roots in Nature
Kalispell Montessori Education (KME)’s outdoor education program, Roots in Nature's mission is to to foster each child’s natural spirit of inquiry and thrill of discovery by connecting them with the outdoors.
Why Outdoor Education?
Dr. Maria Montessori said, “Children are encouraged to understand and appreciate the world around them, realizing their place in the intricate web of life.” Nature is the driving force of exploration through experiential opportunities.
The outdoors is a never-ending source of creative inspiration that children can use to learn who they are and to develop a better understanding of the world around them. Dr. Montessori viewed the outdoor environment as an extension of the children's indoor classroom.
KME currently utilizes private land and the Owen Sowerwine Nature Area for this program.
KME's Outdoor Goals & Methods
Our goals include building community, deepening connection to nature, fostering skills and confidence, cultivating enjoyment and appreciation of the outdoors, encouraging respect for and conservation of the natural world, and supporting personal development, physical awareness, and growth.

A committee of KME teachers plans a variety of approaches, including sit spots, storytelling, hands-on skills practice, nature-based games, and open-ended exploration outside of their indoor roles.
